AI Is Unavailable: How to Tell an Exhausted Allowance from a Service Outage

“It is unavailable right now” can have different causes. Identify the problem first, then decide whether to wait for allowance, check service status, or inspect your connection.

1. Read the complete error message, not just “failed”

If the message explicitly mentions a usage limit, exhausted allowance, remaining usage, or a reset time, check your account usage first. If it shows a connection timeout, gateway error, or a feature that continues to fail, keep investigating the service status.

Keep the relevant error details, but do not share account identifiers, private conversations, or credentials. Searching the original error text is usually more useful than searching for “AI is broken.”

2. Then check the official status page

Both OpenAI and Claude provide official service status pages. Claude’s status page distinguishes component states such as Operational, Degraded Performance, Partial Outage, and Major Outage.

Check the component and event timing that correspond to the feature you are using. A normal status page does not guarantee that your account has allowance; an outage on the status page also does not explain every personal limit message.

3. Choose the next step based on the symptom

  1. A clear limit message: check current account usage and the reset time.
  2. A relevant service event: follow the original event update, and do not treat the event end time as an allowance reset time.
  3. Neither explains it: check your network and sign-in state, then try one small task.
  4. It still fails: contact the relevant product support with only the minimum necessary error information.

4. What a reset reminder can solve

A personal countdown can help you remember a reset time you already know; public reset records can help you check whether an extra reset occurred. Neither can fix a service outage.

Set a reminder only after the cause is clear. Otherwise, the reminder time has no useful meaning. Do not infer that every account will reset at the same time in the future from one incidental recovery.
