Usage limitsReviewed: 2026-09-17

Will Switching Models, Starting a New Chat, or Changing Clients Give Me Allowance Again?

A different entry point does not necessarily mean a different allowance pool. To know whether you can keep working, check how the product measures plan usage.

1. Conversation context and plan allowance are different questions

Starting a new chat changes the conversation context, but it does not prove that your plan allowance has reset. When you see a limit message, first check the usage rules and remaining status.

Whether limits are shared across models can change by product and plan. Even if a lighter model is temporarily available, that does not show that the original limit has been removed.

2. Codex: local and cloud usage may share allowance

OpenAI’s current Codex pricing documentation states that local messages and cloud chats share your plan’s usage allowance, and weekly limits may also apply. Moving from one entry point to another may therefore not provide a new allowance pool.

OpenAI also says that the message counts on the page are estimates, not fixed message limits. Task size, complexity, and usage method can affect consumption, so you cannot judge what remains solely by how many messages you sent.

3. Claude: multiple entry points count toward the same usage limit

Claude’s official help states that usage across claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop counts toward the same usage limit. Length, complexity, features, and model choice can all affect consumption.

Also pay attention to session limits and weekly limits. Remaining capacity in one window does not necessarily mean that every model or feature is still available.

4. A more dependable way to plan work

  1. Check the usage interface before starting a long task.
  2. Confirm whether the model or client you plan to switch to shares the same limit.
  3. Write down any reset time explicitly shown by the interface.
  4. Before the reset, schedule work that does not depend on that tool instead of repeatedly starting new chats to test it.
